Peter Eigen and Burkhard Gnärig started the Center with € 12,500 of their own personal resources and Burkhard worked full time as Executive Director without a salary for the first 15 months. Today the Center receives approximately € 100,000 annually in the form of Core Support from some of the major CSOs and has attracted two corporate organisations as Partners for Excellence. Furthermore, the Center has attracted smaller grants for specific activities from various sources.

For its Convening activities, the Center charges participation fees (on average about € 1,000 per person for a two day workshop) and for its Capacity Building and Shared Services programmes, the Center’s aim is to charge fees to cover expenses associated with providing the service.
